Take a Bike Ride on the Lakeshore Trail
Michigan is home to more rail trails than any other state. So it should be no surprise that there are some amazing trails here in Muskegon, offering cyclists and hikers with mile after mile of outdoor adventure and gorgeous views of our lakes, dunes and protected wetlands. The Muskegon Lakeshore Trail, which winds along the southern shore of Muskegon Lake, is the key foundation of our county's extensive trail system and is easily accessible from trailheads not far from The Pidge Inn.
The Lakeshore Trail is a 12-mile bike and pedestrian pathway from the Muskegon River to Pere Marquette Beach to the Muskegon River. This is easily accessible from The Pidge Inn. Hop on the southern end of the trail down the street from the hotel at Pere Marquette Park, where you can see the South Pierhead Light and the Muskegon Channel. Along your journey, take in the scenic views of Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake, while also passing spectacular sand dunes, charming parks and the lively city of Muskegon itself. The northern-most end of the trail ends at the Muskegon Lake Nature Preserve.
In early 2020, high-water damage closed a portion of the trail, but it is now fully reopened after significant restoration. The trail has been raised about two and a half feet to bring it above the current flood zone of Muskegon Lake. Large limestone riprap has been placed along the way to protect the trail from the waves coming off of Muskegon Lake. The improvements should secure the Lakeshore Trail for hikers and bikers to enjoy for years to come.
The Lakeshore Trail is close to other trails in the region, allowing you to extend your ride quite a distance. It connects with the Fred Meijer Berry Junction Trail and Hart-Montague Trail to the north and the Laketon Trail and Musketawa Trail to the east. In addition to the north and south trailheads, you can hop on the Lakeshore Trail at various marked spots along Lakeshore Drive. It also can be accessed at Heritage Landing, which is about the midpoint of the trail.
When you pack for your West Michigan getaway at The Pidge Inn, don't forget to load your bikes onto your bike rack and bring them with you. Or, you can rent high-quality bikes and helmets for adults and youth from our friends at Lake Effect Sport Bike Rental. They will conveniently drop the bikes off at The Pidge Inn so you can easily head out on to the trail as soon as you are ready.
